TAKEOFF - PERFORMING ALL COUNTS FOR YOUR ESTIMATE

People working in an office at a table .

Counts for Package Items

Most popular brands of estimating software often use pre-entered prices to estimate basic items like conduit, boxes, wiring devices, and wire (via a service or your own efforts). However, local vendors will need to provide quotes for equipment like luminaires, panels, generators, and fire alarm systems based on your electrical take off. Building strong working relationships with different electrical vendors is crucial. On bid day, having many quotes will assist you determine if you're getting the proper pricing levels.

Manufacturer’s Representative Matter

As an Estimator you will benefit greatly from the assistance of a manufacturer's representative throughout the tendering process. This is especially true if you have to change equipment that already exists. A manufacturer's representative will be helpful in locating the appropriate parts, for instance, if the project calls for you to upgrade an old switchboard that was put in during the 1970s or 1980s.

Send out your quantities for all quoted packages as early as possible

The earlier you send out quantities for all quoted packages, the more time your vendors will have to assess the requirements and schedule. Some Vendors will conduct counts for themselves. Sending vendors your own quantities, nevertheless, is required and a great way to see how accurate yours are. Luminaires, equipment, fire alarms, security, data connections, heat tracing, surface raceways, and sound systems generallyl fall under this umbrella.

Counting the Luminaires First

The estimator can become familiar with the project quickly by first counting the luminaires. When counting luminaires, the estimator should use a highlighter to indicate panel positions. This method will be useful as you start the takeoff for the branch wiring for each system. Sending your amounts to suppliers should ideally be postponed until after your takeoffs are complete. If you're pressed for time, send them immediately.

System Lists Vary

in comparison to an industrial project, a commercial project will have a different list of systems. Make sure to adapt your project systems list to the type of project. Your electrical take off will be divided into several systems and components, allowing you to examine each part of the estimate and check it for errors and omissions.
